[Transport] Jan.-PAT Base Fare: $2; 3-Zone System Retained

This morning, I attended the monthly meeting of the
Administration and Finance Committee of the Port
Authority of Allegheny County [PAT]. By a unanimous
vote, the committee members tentatively approved a new
PAT fare schedule, effective January 1, which includes
a $2 base fare for Zone 1 riders, a 25-cent increase
over the current base fare. Final approval of this new
rate schedule, by the entire PAT Board, is expected on
Wednesday morning.

At the public hearings earlier this year, PAT had
proposed increasing the base fare to $2.50 for Zone 1
riders, with higher rates for Zone 2 & 3 riders. As an
alternative, they had also proposed a $2 flat fare for
the entire system, with no additional fare zones.
However, the PAT administration finally proposed, and
the Board Committee tentatively approved, retention of
the three-fare zone system, with the Zone 1 base fare
only increasing to $2 [instead of the $2.50 originally
proposed].
