Wednesday, Pittsburgh City Council tentatively approved an expenditure of $9,000 for a study that could lead to a commuter rail link between the city neighborhoods of Oakland, Hazelwood, and Lawrenceville. Final approval is expected on Tuesday.
Proposed by City Councilman Bill Peduto, this line could help manage expected university and medical center expansion over the next few decades. More information on this project at this link:

I proposed a very similar commuter rail line through Oakland in 1979, as a rerouting of the then-Monongahela Valley Commuter Rail line operated by the Port Authority--the PATrain.
At today's City Council meeting, I proposed that the new rail line be extended from Lawrenceville to Penn Station, Downtown, to significantly increase ridership, and consequently increase the financial viability of this proposed new rail service.
