Hi All,
Edgewood Towne Centre currently has Weekday and Saturday service provided by
the 79A Regent Square. It has been IMPROVED by allowing all stops to be
served both pick up and drop off due to the layover location being at
Brushton Terminal (At Wilkinsburg Station). On Sundays and Holidays, there
is no direct service, but the 61B and 61A are both within a long walking
distance for those who still want to go there (But I think there still
should be direct service to E.T.C. on Sundays and Holidays as well).
In short, I doubt there is an issue of the existance of bus service to the
Towne Centre, however there is an issue in the lack of Sunday/Holiday
Service. Read on if you want to hear an idea for improving such service.
Minor re-adjustments may be of order to allow for a Holiday schedule such as
extending the 79A to Monongehela Avenue and Braddock Avenue (Braddock/Rankin
Side) terminating at Swissvale Station to replace 61B on Weekends and
increasing the 79A span (make it run earlier in the morning and later in the
evening) to cover the 61B trips. In place of the 61B service in Oakland,
the 61A can be rewritten in the weekends to have alternating trips extend to
East Pittsburgh while the other half of the trips only run between
Wilkinsburg Station and Downtown Pittsburgh (Wilkinsburg routing would be
similar to the 69A routing).
By implementing these changes, the 79A ridership can be increased
and operational costs can be reduced as a result of replacing the 61B with
short 61A trips. If this is very successful, non peak and late night weekday
61B can be replaced in that manner to further improve the utility of the 79A
as well as reduce operational costs. In this case, the 61B would only run on
Weekday Peak times and all other times, passengers would have to use the 79A
to go to Regent Square, Braddock, Swissvale, and Rankin.
If you would like to discuss these ideas in more detail (as well as other
ideas I have for other areas--I have alot of ideas), feel free to contact me
as I enjoy talking about how to redesign the transit system to make it more
user friendly for the passenger as well as more efficient for the Port
Authority.
