Health Dept. Asked to Study
Air Quality Impacts of Transit Cutbacks

Pittsburgh, July 11 – The Allegheny County Board of
Health has been asked to direct the Allegheny County
Heath Department to conduct a quantitative study of
the air quality impacts of public transit service
reductions, and transit fare increases, implemented by
Pittsburgh’s Port Authority Transit (PAT) system over
the last four decades. Long-time public transit
advocate, and Mt. Lebanon resident, Glenn A. Walsh
made the request in prepared remarks before the Board
of Health at their regular meeting on Wednesday
afternoon.

The most recent transit service cutbacks, a service
reduction of 15 percent, were implemented by PAT on
June 17. Despite additional State transit funding, all
but assured by the recent State budget agreement, PAT
continues to plan for a transit fare increase
effective Jan. 1.
