[Transit-allegheny] PAT Announces Sept. Service Cuts

Today [July 6], Pittsburgh's Port Authority Transit
[PAT] announced the elimination of 34 MORE bus and
rail routes, effective September 2, if no further
funding is received from the Pennsylvania General
Assembly and/or Allegheny County. Additionally, there
would be weekend elimination of 18 bus routes and
reduction in service on another 65 routes.

This would also result in another 174 layoffs, on top
of the 203 layoffs during last month's service cuts.
And, the September cuts would include the complete
closure of the Harmar Division Bus Garage [which is
PAT's smallest bus garage].

The September service cuts would be 10 percent, on top
of the 15 percent service cuts which took effect on
June 17.

"Should this service reduction go into effect in
September, it will reduce transit options in Allegheny
county to unthinkable levels," Port Authority Chief
Executive Officer Steve Bland said.
