Detroit Science Center - Down but not out

As many museums and planetaria have experienced over the last few
years, the Detroit Science Center ( a privately owned non-profit
organization receiving no government funding) has been struggling with
finances. The staff of the Detroit Science Center have worked hard to
keep our facility open for the families and school groups that visit
us to be inspired about science and technology as hobbies and careers.

The situation has become a little darker, reaching the point that the
administration has closed the Detroit Science Center's doors. All
staff, have been laid off. This closure is planned for a period of 16
days. A "Turnaround Team" of board members and administrators is
working to create a solution that would permit the DSC to reopen
around October 12. Part of this plan would bring back a portion of
DSC staff to run the facility at a lower budget level.
We hope to have our dome open again soon.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Sincerely,
John Schroer
Planetarium Education Coordinator
Detroit Science Center
